GRP team visits Chyulu Honey Processors-Ukulima bora Project

Location: Nthongoni- Chyulu, Makueni County.

The wide range of conservation and alternative, nature positive resilience activities being undertaken by Chyulu Development Foundation has led to conceptualization of Ukulima bora Mazingira bora project (Translated as Sustainable farming for a stable climate). The project ranges from conservation, smart agriculture, clean energy, sustainable water use, with regard to local participation, policy adjustments, community capacity enhancement, profitable household engagement and social inclusion. It is perhaps the most integral concept of the times, already attracting the attention of partners, stakeholders and collaborators.

Through support from The Global Resilience Partnership (As part of RAIN 2 Cohort of sub grantees), the organization social enterprise (Chyulu honey processors) has benefitted towards enhancing the livelihood practices of 400 community farmers and 100 youth, within the Local apiculture value chain. The project has specifically addressed the following critical areas.
1. Supported 500 local apiculture farmers with training and skilling, through tailored capacity enhancement programs,
2. Supported the expansion of farmer production capacities, through integration of traditional loghive technology with modernized systems, leading to higher adaptability and usability,
3. Supported the unionization of farmers for common bargain practice, and onboarded them into NTHONZA Farmers cooperative society,
4. Supported the value addition of Chyulu organic honey, through refurbishment of brands and the processing unit,
5. Increased the visibility of Chyulu organic honey, through supporting establishment of digital marketing system.

On the 3rd of December 2025, a team led by CEO of Global Resilience Partnership Mr. Jesper Hörnberg and Chairperson at Munich Le Foundation Ms. Renate Bleich visited the project, to ascertain its progress and interact with targeted community representatives and beneficiaries. The visit entailed a tour on one of beneficiary model farms, and close ended interaction with a forum of participants including farmers, project experts, opinion leaders, the clergy and government officials. Alot was echoed about the project, pointing to the impact and significance being attained. The team took time to forcast on the project, with a visionary idea of a Apiculture Center of Excellence coming up.
The project has also extended conservation efforts, through its partnership with Lukenya University and Equity Bank Limited into growing of atleast 8000 trees this year.

Through the successful implementation of this project, Chyulu Development Foundation forsees a highly sustainable future for local farmers, with regard to ecological stability, environmental quality, employability and improved incomes.
